John Frieda Precision Foam Colour Brilliant Brunette Review - 5N Natural Medium Brown

John Frieda Foam Colour - 5N £9.99
John Freida's Precision Foam Colour in 5N is a medium toned brown which has added slightly golden tones to my hair.  I went for quite a dramatic colour change, as prior to this I was a bleach blonde.  The colour took well to my hair, but since the bleach has made it so porous it's faded a lot in just 2 washes.  When I first applied this my hair was really dark brown, considerably darker than the shade on the box.  This dye has left my hair looking both glossy and healthy.

I've used John Frieda's Foam Hair Colour many times before and every time I've found application to be really easy.  In the box you get a mixing bottle (1) with a separate dispenser lid, colour activator (2), a deep conditioner (3), gloves and instructions.  I especially like the quality of the gloves provided, as many other hair dye brands are opting for cheaper unusable gloves in order to cut costs.

To apply this I first divide my hair into 4 sections and clip each section up and out the way.  I then pour the contents of bottle 2 into bottle 1 and tip the bottle several times until it appears completely mixed.  I then swap the normal lid for the pump lid.  This may sound like common sense but I remember the first time I tried to use one of these dyes and I couldn't figure out how to use the pump applicator lid.  So to get the foam out of the pump you simply squeeze the bottle, rather than pushing down on the pump.

I then take one section of hair down and apply the foam all over that section until it's completely saturated in hair dye.  I then repeat this process on the other 3 sections.  I have bob length hair and a full heads application uses less than half the contents of the bottle.  Even when I used to have long hair I only ever needed one box to colour my whole head.

From my experience, this product is pretty much foolproof.  It gives great even coverage without missing any patches of hair.  Plus it's got a non drip formula so it isn't messy to apply.

Whilst this dye didn't irritate me whilst I was applying it, it has left my scalp feeling dry uncomfortable.  This surprised me since I've never experienced this before, even from bleach.  The dye doesn't have a very strong smell which is great, as I hate it when hair dyes smell strongly of ammonia.  The conditioner included is extremely hydrating and leaves hair feeling silky soft.

As my hair was so light to begin with I'll probably have to dye it again in about a week.  But if your hair is within the recommended 2 shades of this colour then it should last at least 6 weeks before fading.  Keeping that in mind, if your hair is dyed a darker shade than this already, then this product won't be able to lighten it.  You'd have to strip your current colour out first.

Product points: 5/5
This hair dye is really easy and neat to apply, and leaves hair looking glossy and as though it was died in a salon.
